Biography
I am available from Sept, 2024 - January 31st, 2024 and would love to visit your classroom.

I have many years of experience as a Visual Arts and Language Arts teacher in both Saskatchewan and New Brunswick. My time as an Artist-in-Residence for a number of New Brunswick schools has given me a chance to work with students of all ages. It is my good fortune to live on a dairy farm with one husband, two daughters, a hundred cows, many cats and one dog.
Publications
My most recent publications are children’s picture books.

If A Horse Had Words (Tundra Books, 2018) Winner of the NB Book Awards Alice Kitts Memorial Award

Midnight and Moon (Tundra Books, 2022) Winner of the NB Book Awards Alice Kitts Memorial Award

My poetry, short fiction and creative non-fiction have been published in a number of Canadian literary journals and several anthologies. I have also written for CBC radio. Eyehill, a collection of linked stories, was published by Goose Lane Editions.

WISP What I Offer
Grades K-2 - I can offer a reading of either book, and, if time allows, I can also lead students in creating a paper sculpture of a horse based on the characters in the books.

Grades 3-12 – Biography of a Picture Book. I will take students through the life story of a picture book, emphasizing that ideas often come from close to home but a story travels widely before it becomes the picture book you hold in your hands. For example, I use a map of the world to show how the story in If A Horse Had Words travelled from Saskatchewan (idea) to New Brunswick (writing) to England (illustrator’s home) to Toronto (publisher) to China (factory) then finally, back to Canada (bookstores). I can talk about the role of the illustrator and the editor. I finish with a reading, and, if time allows and there is interest, an illustration activity.

Grades 6-12- Drawing the Line: Character and Conflict. In this workshop, students participate in a gesture drawing activity where they create very quick line drawings of 4 – 6 human figures. Students then choose two figures and imagine ways the two could interact. We experiment with positioning the figures so that their interactions appear hostile, friendly, romantic, etc. Students then write the opening scene of a story based on the drawings. 60 – 90 minutes, depending on class age and size.
