About the WFNB

Whether you write full-time — or are just a member of the public who wants to connect with others who love words — you will feel at home here. We are devoted only to the craft and appreciation of writing here in New Brunswick.

WFNB began more than 40 years ago as a few friends gathered in a writers’ living room. Today, we’re a province-wide organization with members living in every corner of New Brunswick. We also have members from all Maritime provinces, Ontario, Quebec and Alberta--even a few expats in the US.

Our community includes memoirists, corporate writers, poets, mainstream writers, short story writers, magazine editors, novelists, screenwriters, newsletter creators, high school students, book editors, university students, teachers and book club readers, spoken word artists, playwrights, journalists, and other members of the public. All are welcome.

After many years of serving the public as a non-profit organization, we have recently become a registered charity. To learn more about our activities, check out our programs and explore our site.

Mandate

    • We promote excellence in the literary arts industry in New Brunswick by organizing annual writing competitions and awarding annual merit-based prizes for literature in New Brunswick
    • We advance the public's appreciation for the arts by providing the public with presentations, performance events, and a forum for qualified literary artists to exhibit, present, or perform their literary works through participation in such events.
    • We advance education by providing instructional seminars, workshops, and other educational activities on topics related to the literary arts to the public.
    • We undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the attainment of the above-mentioned charitable purposes.

    Objectives

    • We nurture a sense of community among New Brunswick writers - and those who are interested in reading and writing - of all ages, genres, and levels of development, in all geographic areas of the province.
    • We educate by offering New Brunswick writers and the general public workshops on both the craft and the business aspects of writing, and offer them opportunities to share their work.
    •  We raise public awareness of – and engagement in – the culture of writing, storytelling, and literature in New Brunswick.
    • We promote literacy in schools and in the New Brunswick community at large.

    Territorial Acknowledgement

    The Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick acknowledges that the land on which we live, work and gather is the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi’kmaq Peoples, and we honour the spirit of our ancestors’ Treaties of Peace and Friendship.
