The Fundamentals of Poetry - Discussion Two

Better Writing Through Poetry- with Kathy Mac

Location

Online via Zoom.

Description

Last fall, one of our members suggested offering a set of workshops focusing on poetry basics for those new to the discipline, and since poetry is such a broadly popular art form across our membership (and in the province, it seems, given our history of wonderful poets), we thought a set of three stimulating discussions for both brand-new and seasoned poets would warm up your winter!

Kathy Mac will continue our discussion with unit two on Sunday, January 12, from 2 to 4 pm. All three workshops will be conducted via zoom, and as always, a recording of the session will be available afterward for participant review.

Find the workshop description and Kathy's bio below.

“Better Writing Through Poetry” (January 12, 2025)  is an introductory workshop for writers of any level interested in becoming better at this peculiar pursuit called creative writing. Whatever your usual genre, the ideas and techniques we discuss should not just improve your writing but also expand your understanding of the possibilities of creative word-slinging.

The workshop will include discussions of

  • significant ways that poetry differs from other genres of writing,
  • the importance of taking emotional risks,
  • using sensory details to create concrete images,
  • what it means to “respond” to someone else’s poem, etc.

We’ll use exemplar poems by New Brunswick poets Triny Finlay and Lilianne Welch to illustrate many of the points we discuss, and as models for our own early drafts of a poem.

Come prepared to listen, talk, laugh, and write!
