Biography
Tony Merzetti joined the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Co-operative in 1983 as a member and thereupon began his journey in film. Prior to joining the Co-op, he received an MBA from Saint Mary’s University and his business skills would prove useful when he became the Co-op’s Executive Director in 1986.

At the Co-op he volunteered on scores of short films in a variety of roles ultimately specializing in cinematography (writing with light). He became a filmmaker over time. He has produced numerous films and has written and directed 6 of his own including: The Man Who Skied Citadel Hill, Natural Remedy (co-directed with Tim Rayne), Ciao Montelibretti, Gruff and Ready: The Mazzuca’s Story, Francis Sherman: When All is Said and Done, Bliss Carman: Divine Force of Nature. He has worked on various films in the commercial world including Children of a Lesser God and New Waterford Girl.

He has been a part-time lecturer at UNB since 2000 in the Department of Media Arts and Culture where he teaches both digital and celluloid filmmaking. At the Co-op, he is part of a script development assessment committee that works with emerging filmmakers to develop their calling card film scripts in the Short Film Venture Program.

Tony won an Excellence Award for Community Cultural Development in New Brunswick in 2005 and and shared the CBC Pioneer Award at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2010 with Cat LeBlanc. In 2012, he was the recipient for the the Caisses populaires acadiennes Arts and Cultural Management Award. The award is given to celebrate excellence in professionalism, leadership, management, promotion, and exceptional contribution to the arts and cultural sector in New Brunswick. In 2022 he received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (New Brunswick) for exceptional leadership in the development and growth of the film industry in our province.

He currently sits as treasurer on the board of directors for the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund.

His greatest pride comes from seeing his students and film co-op members develop into successful filmmakers, craftspeople and video company entrepreneurs. He delights is seeing the Co-op reach into new geographic communities and the development of filmmakers in multicultural and Indigenous communities.

Year back he wrote 2 sci-fi books and 2 feature length screenplays and hopes to get back to writing again when he eases into the retirement phase of his life. He loves reading thriller novels and is delighted to see the writers federation involved in the visit of one of his favourite authors.
