Biography
I’m a freelance writer, author, photographer, workshop leader and speaker based in the moose, bear and coyote country of south-east New Brunswick, Canada. I write about conservation and nature; our relationship to place and each other; and the challenges of protecting and healing this battered, but beautiful planet.

It's a joy to search for stories that reveal who we are, tease out the tender and tangled roots below the surface of the tale; and weave these into narratives to enhance and evolve our understanding and view of self and other, of culture and world. In the decades that I've been pursuing this work, I've written for reams of magazines covering topics on everything from peregrine falcons and shorebirds to caribou and salmon, from bakers and woodcarvers to taxidermists and fisherwomen.

I also deliver creative writing workshops and help corporate, government and non-profit clients tell a good story. I've served on the Board of Directors for the WFNB and was former-president of the Professional Writers’ Association of Canada (PWAC), Moncton Chapter.

WISP What I Offer
Creative Writing Workshops: With creative writing, we need few tools beyond a notebook and pen, and are limited only by our imaginations. I can provide workshops in nature writing (indoors or outdoors), personal journaling, creative wordplay for all ages, essays, story structure, creating strong characters, or interviewing skills.

Book Reading/Discussion: I can deliver a reading from my book, Sanctuary: The Story of Naturalist Mary Majka, then speak about this inspiring woman’s life. Mary was one of our pioneering environmentalists. As an advocate for outdoor education, she took hundreds of students on outdoor field trips beginning in the early 1960s. Her TV show, “Have you Seen?” televised in the 60s-70s presented the mysteries and complexities of the natural world to a generation of young people. Despite having many tragedies and challenges to overcome, Mary remained true to her nature and served her community in a very grand way. This is a talk/discussion that will inspire teens who are struggling to find their identity or encountering adversity in their lives.

Social Discussions: I have taught writing to rural groups in Haiti and been involved with social and conservation issues here at home. I can deliver a talk and slideshow about my experiences in Haiti and tie this into the ways that we can involve ourselves in kindness/compassion or advocacy/activism work here at home.

Career Discussion: For older age groups, I could provide a discussion or Q&A on the life of a freelance writer. What is involved, how to get started, and the many ways in which writers might make a living.

Let’s talk about how I can fit my experiences with writing to enhance your curriculum.
