Wendy is the author of Sable Island: The Wandering Sandbar, a non-fiction book for 7-12 year-olds; and the co-author of Breaking the Word Barrier: Stories of Adults Learning to Read, an anthology on literacy.
Wendy has been a freelance writer since 1999, writing over 200 articles for publications such as Readers’ Digest, Saltscapes and The Globe & Mail.
She also writes and designs marketing products for corporations, and does communications writing for the federal government.
Wendy supports herself solely by her creativity and in addition to non-fiction, she writes picture books, middle grade and even screenplays.
Wendy has been a member of Writers-in-the-Schools in New Brunswick since 2002, and in Nova Scotia since 2012. She loves visiting schools and has done them, both in person and virtually, in schools in Canada and the US.
Wendy has put on writing/art workshops for organizations such as the YMCA, Frye Festival, Homeless Hotel (MYR) and Peter Gzowski Family Literacy Day.
Wendy also facilitated her own after-school fine arts and writing program (Art & Soul) for children ages 8-14 in Moncton-area schools.

Sable Island Presentation Discover how ordinary schoolchildren saved the Sable Island horses on this remote island (one of Canada’s newest national parks) off the coast of Nova Scotia. Pirates, quicksand, singing sand and sharks- all in our own backyard! Photo presentation/Q&A, 30-45 minutes, all ages.
“Written & Illustrated By…” Includes a brief discussion of various mediums/styles used in picture books, then students write and illustrate their own stories in a standard 32-page PB format and read their work, time permitting. Full day, ages 9 and up (great workshop for an Enrichment Day).
Illustration 101 Includes a brief discussion of various mediums/styles used in illustration, then students illustrate their own work (or a classic fairy tale), by doing thumbnail sketches, a dummy book and cover art. Full-colour art, time permitting. Half-day, ages 9 and up.
Picturing Words Includes a brief discussion of various mediums/styles used in children’s picture books, then older students illustrate a classic story: middle school students illustrate a character in action, both chosen from a box (for example: a pink hippo in a tutu / walking a tightrope); and younger students each illustrate one page of the same story which will be bound and read during story time. 45 minutes, all ages.
My Life in Pajamas: A Career as a Freelance Writer Join Wendy for a pajama party as she shares what it’s like to write for a living. 45 min, all ages.
Art & Soul Fine art workshops on drawing, painting (watercolour & acrylic), and pottery, as well as papier mâché and pumpkin carving. Various times, all ages.
