Joe Blades has been giving readings and publishing his poetry since 1980. He was born in Halifax, NS, Canada. Based in Fredericton, NB, since 1990, Blades is a writer, artist, educator, and publisher–president of the independent literary publishing house Broken Jaw Press Inc. founded by him in the winter of 1984 in Banff, Alberta.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (1988) from NSCAD in Halifax, NS, and a Master of Education (2012) from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB.
Blades is a Past President of the League of Canadian Poets, the Canadian Poetry Association, and the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association.
He is the award-winning producer–host, since 1995, of the weekly Ashes, Paper, & Beans: Fredericton’s Writing & Arts Show on CHSR 97.9 FM; is an active member of the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang writers’ group, and in the NB Coordinator for the Canadian Labour International Film Festival. Blades exhibits handmade bookworks, photographs, paintings, and objet d’art primarily in Canada and Europe. He has given readings, lectures, and workshops across Canada, in the eastern USA, Scotland, and Europe.
